Get the Outer Ring Road and Bridge completed
Galway City is forecasted to grow by an additional 40,000 to 45,000 people in the next 16 years. This means that by 2040, our population will be more than 120,000 people. The Quincentenary Bridge was opened almost 40 years ago. It’s time for us to act and provide for the inevitable future of population and traffic growth that is coming.
I know of many people who won’t come into Galway because of the traffic, leading to many city centre businesses saying that trade is quiet. Every morning and every day from lunchtime onward, the streets and roads around the city are effectively a giant car park. This is an environmental disaster with thousands of cars and trucks belching out diesel and petrol fumes, or running down their batteries, while stuck in a frustrating logjam.
We need to move on all fronts: new bridge, better public transport, and more cycling and walking lanes.
